It's too late! As you were finishing your bike's oil change, you felt that awful feeling of stripping the threads.
 
A part from "Let it be a lesson not to torque to specs" but only by feel, for the drain plug, what can you do know?
 
Drilling and tapping for a large diameter is difficult without stripping the whole engine. Add that some bikes like the Suzuki DR650 already use a 14mm bolt, and the typical size above is 16mm, which can be too much.
 
You could also try to repair it with an Heli-Coil, but they work best on blind holes. Securing the coil on a drain hole required lots of prep and attention and is not easily done.
 
Here comes the beauty of this kit: It is inexpensive, fast, and easy to install. No special tool is required to save your bike, and you could be ready in minutes!
 
This "Save My Case" Drain Plug Thread Repair Kit has a special bolt slightly larger than the stock one, with a self-tapping head (conical with cutting slots). This part will mount permanently on the case, while the smaller bolt in the middle will piggyback on this large bolt with a threaded hole in the middle.
 
Measure/check the size of your stock drain bolt to choose the correct kit size.
These kits are universal and can work with any bikes. We stock 3 sizes that are commonly found on the following bikes for example:
Suzuki DR650: Choose M14x1.25
Suzuki DR-Z400: Choose M12x1.25
Honda XR650L: Choose M12x1.5
 
 
Installation Instructions:
 
1) Clean around the drain bolt area and wipe clean the threads to remove any stripped metal.
2) Thread the piggyback plug into the hole, a few turns in, then back out a few turns and remove it to vaccum/clean any loose metal possible.
3) Thread it back in until it bottoms out, remove it, then clean up again the same way.
4) You are now ready to install it for good, wiping the threads with brake cleaner on a rag is a good idea. Install the piggyback bolt with the large o-ring and a bit of Red Loctite on the threads.
5) Screw in the small oil drain plug with the small o-ring, and the installation is complete!
